Dr. Standora had a lab for his biology class at the Field Station in Spring 2011. They explored energy content in different organisms using a bomb calorimeter and dried wax worms.

Samples were finely ground using a mortar and pestle.

Once ground, the samples were weighed carefully. A maximum of 1g of sample is used each time.

Samples were loaded into a cup with a fuse, placed in a bomb container that was loaded with oxygen, and put into the bomb calorimeter instrument to measure the energy output of the sample.
