"Modeling thermal structure and circulation in the Great Lakes"

This presentation aims to paint a broad picture of major physical processes in the Great Lakes and their implications for lake ecology. It is based on research conducted by the author in the last decade in the course of several large-scale multidisciplinary projects (EEGLE, IFYLE, ECOFORE, Multi-Stress) on Lakes Michigan, Huron, and Erie. We start with a description of daily variations of temperature and currents during episodic events in winter and summer, subsequently discuss their seasonal cycle, and conclude with long-term mean characteristics. Ecological illustrations include the impact of currents on transport of sediments and biogeochemically important materials, larval fish advection and growth, and effects of wind on summer thermocline and hypoxia.
