Hello, Bengals. Join us this week as Carol Townsend, Buffalo State College associate professor of art and design, presents “Spain: ‘Bucket List’ Destination - An Artist’s Eye View, from the Alhambra to La Sagrada Família” on Tuesday, March 10, at 12:15 p.m. in Upton Hall 230. This second talk in the spring 2020 Artists on the Road: Travel as a Source of Inspiration series will feature Townsend’s explorations in Barcelona, Valencia, Granada, Seville, Madrid, and Toledo. Townsend is the former chair of Buffalo State’s Design Department and past president of the Buffalo Society of Artists. Her ceramics and mixed media work have been exhibited widely, including in a two-person show at the Liptov Gallery of the Peter Michal Bohun Museum of Art in Liptovský Mikuláš, Slovakia. Her work is included in the permanent collection of the Burchfield Penney Art Center and has also appeared in numerous publications. She was granted master craftsman status by the Kenan Center in Lockport and has led workshops in Mexico and at the Chautauqua Institution. The Artists on the Road series is co-sponsored by the Art and Design Department and the Center for Global Engagement.

Thomas Pepinsky, professor of government at Cornell University, will use the experiences of East and Southeast Asia to explore the varieties of populism across the world. His talk will focus on how nationalist mobilization and mass incorporation shape popular identity, membership, and populists' strategies in contemporary democracies. ‘Women and Mathematics’

Women gained the right to vote in the United States 100 years ago, but despite steady gains since then, there is still disparity in the area of mathematics. Most people cannot name five women who are influential in math. This Teaching and Learning Center workshop will explore the data about women and mathematics, the stories of some female mathematicians, and the challenges faced by women in mathematics and what we can do about it. Gaynor from the Baldy Center for Law & Social Policy at the University at Buffalo School of Law, looks at the protest movement against land reclamation in Bali, Indonesia, which initially began with the resistance of coastal communities whose livelihoods were threatened by a proposed development project. Screening and Panel Discussion - 67: Buffalo Uprising

This one-hour film explores Buffalo's three-day urban uprising during the long, hot summer of 1967 using found and archival footage and interviews. A discussion will follow with filmmaker Doug Ruffin, moderated by assistant professor Dorothea Braemer and professor Michael Niman. The event, co-sponsored by the Buffalo State College Communication Department and the WNY Peace Center, is free and open to the public.
