George Besch, of Designing to Live Sustainably, will present "Preparing Western New York for Climate Change: What Do We PrepareĀ For...Everything?"
He will share his view that on the whole, we are deeply into denial and avoidance of needing to prepare for the effects of global warming, as we've been about the phenomena itself. He will review effects going on as we speak and how little notice is given to them, at least here in Western New York where we are indeed blessed with comparative advantages.
Businesses in areas suffering the effects of a changing climate are already buying property here, while we are "blissfully" not protecting what we have. He will engage the audience in a discussion about whether it is worth doing climate modeling (consider how much faster and more serious effects are proving to be) vs. just preparing for everything, taking action now. And, if modeling, how far into the future? This presentation is part of the WNY Chapter of the American Meteorological Society's fall 2016 seminar series, hosted by the Buffalo State Geography and Planning Department's meteorology and climatology program.
